Understanding Trauma & PTSD
The past is over.
Its grip on you can be too.
Trauma isn’t always the dramatic, headline-grabbing event people imagine. It can be anything that overwhelmed your nervous system’s capacity to cope at the time it happened — childhood experiences that seemed small but left a lasting mark, relationships that eroded your sense of self, or sudden events that changed everything in an instant.
What trauma leaves behind isn’t a memory, it’s a programme. A set of automatic responses, beliefs and behaviours that your brain installed to keep you safe, and never got the update that the threat has passed.
This is why talking about it often isn’t enough. The programme doesn’t live in the part of your mind you can access through conversation. It lives deeper, and that’s exactly where Cognitive Hypnotherapy goes.
“You don’t need to relive what happened in detail for this work to be effective. Many of the techniques I use are entirely content-free, meaning the healing can happen without you having to talk through every painful memory.”

How I work with
Trauma & PTSD
Every person who comes to me with trauma has a unique story, and the work is always tailored to that. There is no fixed script, no predetermined number of sessions, and no pressure to discuss anything before you feel ready.
The first session is about building a picture together, understanding what has happened, how it is showing up in your life now, and what you want your life to look and feel like on the other side of this work. We always work at your pace, and I aim to ensure that you leave every session feeling better than when you arrived.
From there, I draw on her toolkit of evidence-based approaches, blending hypnotherapy, eye movement processing, somatic techniques and others, selecting whatever combination is most likely to be effective for you specifically. Many of these techniques work without requiring you to narrate your trauma in detail, which means the healing process doesn’t have to feel like reliving it.

The Cognitive Hypnotherapy Trauma Toolkit
Techniques I may
use for Trauma & PTSD
No two people are the same, and no two sessions are the same. I choose from the toolkit I have built up from more than 14 years in practice based on what you bring and what I think is most likely to work for your specific experience.

Eye Movement Processing
EMDR and EMI use guided eye movements to process the emotional charge stored in traumatic memories. This is gentle and doesn’t require you to narrate what happened. Used by the British Army to treat PTSD in returning soldiers.
The Rewind Technique
Based on NLP and the neuroscience of neuroplasticity, this technique allows traumatic memories to be recalled and stored differently, stripping away the emotional intensity so they become a story from the past rather than a present threat.
Timeline Regression
A classic hypnotherapy technique that guides you back to the source of the trauma from a position of safety, allowing new understanding and perspectives to be integrated at a subconscious level.
Somatic Therapy
Trauma lives in the body as well as the mind. Somatic approaches address the physical manifestations of trauma — the tension, the shutdown, the nervous system responses — for deep and lasting resolution.
EFT Tapping
Stimulating acupressure points while focusing on the emotions connected to trauma. A powerful technique that also gives you an immediate tool to use independently when difficult feelings arise between sessions.
Hypnotherapy
Using trance to consolidate the therapeutic work, reprogram subconscious responses and build a vivid mental blueprint of life beyond trauma. Personalised audio recordings extend this work between sessions.
“Victoria quite literally gave me my life back. Her approach is purely based on you — I felt valued, safe, seen, and allowed to feel vulnerable in the best kind of way. Because of her, I reclaimed myself and became the person I was always meant to be.”

About Your Therapist
Victoria Ward
Cognitive Hypnotherapist
I have been working with people in private practice for more than 14 years, formerly on Harley Street and now near Colchester, Essex, and online with clients worldwide. In that time, I have come to believe one thing above almost everything else: there is no such thing as a standard case.
Two people can walk in with the same label — anxiety, depression, low confidence — and be doing completely different things internally. The way your subconscious has constructed the problem is unique to you, shaped by your history, your nervous system and the meaning you have made of your experiences. Which is why the way I work is always tailored entirely to you, not to a diagnosis.
My job is to understand exactly how you are running this problem, and then to help you change it at the level where it actually lives.
